Working Girl Wardrobe

I don’t like following the rules. As a child, I firmly believed that rules were made to be broken and pushed to their limits (my mother included). This belief magnified when it came to my clothing, and it is a opinion that still holds true today. For me, white is meant to be worn after labor day, silver and gold look best when paired together and mixing prints is what makes an outfit complete.

That being said, I also believe that there are times when a women’s look needs to be toned down for the sake of professionalism and appropriateness. While I’m sure that extra tight, extra mini bodycon is a huuuge hit at the bars on Friday nights, it’s not exactly ‘work attire’. When it comes to building a work wardrobe there are a few key and essential pieces that I believe every girl should own.

1) Wrap Dress
Diane Von Furstenberg is one smart cookie. As the inventor of the wrap dress, she knew exactly what women wanted (before they even knew) and delivered. This is a classic to me because this particular type of dress is offered in any size, colour and pattern. My advice: if you find a wrap dress that you absolutely love, buy multiples (trust me, you’ll be glad you did).

2) Black Heels
If you can buy only one article of clothing from this list, I strongly, strongly, strongly urge it to be a pair of black heels. I myself have two pairs and I am always on the hunt for a third. They are so versatile and classy.

DV by Dolce Vita ‘Odetta’ Pump ($102)

Jessica Simpson 'Claudette' Pump CAD 90.33

3) Pencil Skirt
A nice alternative to pants and dresses, pencil skirts offer a little variety to your wardrobe. Though many say that you must buy a pencil skirt in black or navy, I don’t believe this. If you are able to find a pencil skirt in a vibrant colour or with a tasteful pattern, then I say: Go for it! Sidenote: Black is a nice option as you will wear it almost on a daily basis and black will not show the proof of that.

Ella Moss ‘Paz Print’ Pencil Skirt ($101)

Adrianna Papell ‘Print Stretch Cotton’ Pencil Skirt ($68)

Clover Canyon ‘Donegal’ Print Pencil Skirt ($251)

4) Blazer
Blazers are the symbol of professionalism. A good blazer is an investment and when shopping you have to treat it like you are buying a new car or house. This will become you’re go to jacket when you’re going in for an interview or a meeting. Take good care of yours and it will bring you endless possibilities.

Chelsea28 ‘Matte & Shine’ Mixed Media Blazer ($81)

Vince Camuto ‘Stretch Cotton One-Button’ Blazer ($171)

5) White Button Down
This is one closet staple that will truly never go out of style. A white button down looks crisp and clean, and can pull together any outfit with an air of professionalism. Bonus: paired with boyfriend jeans and flats, a white button down can be the perfect addition to a weekend look.

Foxcroft ‘Christine’ Cotton Shirt ($84)

Gap ‘Tailored Shirt’ Button Down ($55)

Burberry Brit 'Shirt with Check Contrast' ($257)

And there you have it! With these wardrobe essentials tucked away in your closet you’ll be ready for whatever the working world throws your way.

What are your wardrobe essentials?

XO, Kristen
